5 Game-Changing Time-Saving Tips for Busy Home Cooks

Published on 30 September 2025 at 07:16

Hey y’all — Mama Hall here! 👩‍🍳

Today we’re talkin’ about something every home cook wishes they had more of: time. After 31 years of feeding my family (including four always-hungry boys!), I’ve picked up a few tricks that help me save hours in the kitchen — without sacrificing flavor or fun.

Whether you’re a brand-new home cook or a seasoned kitchen queen, here are my top 5 time-saving tips that’ll help you cook smarter, not harder.

🗓️ 1. Meal Planning is Your Best Friend

I cannot stress this enough: spending 20–30 minutes at the start of your week to plan your meals can save you hours later on.

Here’s why it works:

  • No more 5pm “what’s for dinner?” panic

  • Fewer grocery trips

  • Less food waste

  • Lower grocery bills

  • More peaceful evenings

📝 Mama Tip: Keep a list of your family’s favorite meals in your planner or on your fridge. When you’re stuck, pull from the list and build your week around what you already know they’ll eat!

🍲 2. Batch Cooking = Future You Will Thank You

This one’s a lifesaver, especially during busy weeks. When you cook once and eat twice (or more), you’re giving yourself a gift of time.

How I do it:

  • Double or triple recipes

  • Freeze extra portions

  • Label everything with contents and date

  • Keep a running freezer inventory

  • Thaw overnight in the fridge

Great batch-cooking candidates: soups, stews, casseroles, chili, marinated meats, taco meat — you name it!

🧼 3. Clean As You Go (Trust Me on This One)

This is one of my golden rules. Nobody wants to cook a great meal and then face a disaster zone of dishes.

Try this instead:

  • Fill your sink with hot, soapy water before you start

  • Rinse or wash bowls and utensils while food’s cooking

  • Keep a bowl nearby for scraps as you prep

  • Wipe down as you go

  • Load the dishwasher during cooking downtimes

It may take a few tries to make it a habit — but once you do, you’ll never go back.

🔪 4. Set Up Smart Kitchen Stations

Think of your kitchen like a little workshop. A bit of organization goes a long way in saving time and energy.

Here’s what to do:

  • Keep your prep area stocked with cutting boards, knives, and peelers

  • Store cooking utensils near the stove

  • Place wrap, foil, and containers where you pack up leftovers

  • Keep spices and oils near where you cook

  • Group clean-up supplies together and keep ‘em handy

🧂 Mama Tip: Store things where you use them. If your spices are on the other side of the kitchen, you’re wasting steps every night.

🥄 5. Master the Art of "Mise en Place"

It sounds fancy, but it just means: get everything ready before you start cooking.

That means:

  • Read the recipe from start to finish

  • Get all your ingredients out

  • Measure everything ahead of time

  • Chop vegetables first

  • Have pots, pans, and utensils ready

This one habit can cut your cooking time in half and make the process feel so much smoother.

💛 Ready to Save Time?

Cooking shouldn’t feel like a chore. With a little planning, some smart prep, and a few new habits, you can take back your evenings and actually enjoy the cooking process again.
